He began his career in Dynamo in the reserve team, but thanks to a lucky coincidence and hard work, he made it into the main team.
Smetanin was distinguished by his size and extremely unflappable character. He also stood out for his precise positioning in the goal, his cool play on interceptions and his reliability in one-on-one situations. He was the hero of the 1995 Russian Cup final, where he made the decisive save in the post-match penalty shootout.
After a long period in Dynamo, he moved to Spartak Moscow, and ended his career in 2006 in the city of Lobnya in the Moscow Region. He later worked as a goalkeeper coach.
