He made his debut in the final of the USSR Cup in 1953, replacing Lev Yashin. He earned fame among fans for his spectacular saves at crucial moments, and among his teammates for his confident play.
He was excellent at calculating opponents and choosing his position in the goal, had excellent natural abilities, and a soft touch. He was a full-fledged backup to Lev Yashin in the club and the national team.
After finishing his career, he returned to his native Nalchik, where he worked at the local Spartak school as a goalkeeper coach.
